Did you know that 1 in 5 U.S. adults experience mental illness each year, leading to 12 billion lost workdays annually? The impact on workplace productivity, absenteeism, and healthcare costs is staggering. However, there’s a powerful, often-overlooked tool for supporting mental well-being: NUTRITION!

March is National Nutrition Month—an ideal time to highlight the powerful connection between nutrition and mental health. The foods we choose don’t just fuel our bodies; they also play a crucial role in mood, focus, and overall well-being.

The Gut-Brain Connection: Food as Fuel for Mental Wellness

Scientific research has increasingly highlighted the connection between the gut and the brain, showing that nutrient-dense foods can play a key role in mood, focus, and stress management. Simple dietary shifts—such as incorporating omega-3 fatty acids, fiber-rich foods, and essential vitamins—can enhance cognitive function, stabilize emotions, and reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression.

“The foods we eat can either fuel our mental health or drain it. By prioritizing nutrient-dense choices, employees can boost their resilience, enhance focus, and improve their overall well-being—leading to a happier, more productive workplace”, says Kelly Springer, RD, MS, CDN, CEO and Founder of Kelly’s Choice

How National EAP and Kelly’s Choice Empower Employees

Committed to a holistic approach to employee wellness. National EAP is collaborating with Kelly’s Choice to enhance our wellness offerings, now including referrals to 1:1 medical nutrition counseling virtually. In the modern workplace, empathy is the characteristic that sets exceptional leaders apart from the crowd. Empathy, the ability to understand and share the feelings of others, has been undervalued in the past. Yet, it’s a superpower that can transform teams, enhance productivity, and build trust within an organization. For organizational leaders, developing and leveraging empathy is no longer optional; it’s a must. Empathy is a critical leadership skill with tangible benefits:

  1. Improved Employee Engagement: Employees feel valued and respected when leaders understand their experiences and challenges.
  2. Enhanced Collaboration: Empathy fosters open communication, making it easier for team members to collaborate and solve problems effectively.
  3. Reduced Turnover: Employees are less likely to leave when they feel understood and supported. Empathy creates a culture of belonging, which is vital for retention.
  4. Resilience During Change: Leaders who approach transitions empathetically help their teams adapt and thrive, even in uncertainty.

While some leaders may naturally exhibit empathy, for others, it is a skill that needs to be developed and strengthened over time. Here are actionable tips to help leaders incorporate empathy into their daily interactions:

  1. Practice Active Listening
    • Be fully present during conversations. Put away distractions like phones or emails and focus entirely on the speaker.
    • Acknowledge emotions and validate concerns. Phrases like, “That sounds frustrating” or “I can see how that would be challenging” show that you’re truly listening.
  2. Ask Open-Ended Questions
    • Encourage employees to share their perspectives by asking questions like, “What support would be most helpful to you right now?”
    • This type of question signals that you’re seeking answers and trying to understand your employee’s experience.
  3. Show Vulnerability
    • Share your own experiences and challenges when appropriate. Vulnerability humanizes leaders and makes it easier for employees to relate.
  4. Provide Recognition on A Regular Basis
    • Acknowledge hard work and celebrate achievements, both big and small. Simple gestures like a thank-you note or a shout-out in a meeting go a long way.
  5. Prioritize Mental Health and Well-Being
    • Encourage work-life balance by respecting boundaries and modeling healthy behaviors, such as taking breaks and unplugging after hours.
    • Provide access to mental health resources and promote open conversations about stress and burnout.

When leaders prioritize empathy, its impact extends beyond individual teams. Empathetic leadership creates a workplace culture where employees feel empowered to support one another. An empathetic culture can foster resilience, innovation, and collaboration.

In today’s world, organizations cannot afford to overlook the power of empathy. Organizational leaders have a unique opportunity to champion this skill, transforming their teams and their entire workplace culture.

Empathy is not a soft skill. It is a leadership superpower. By understanding and addressing the needs of their teams, leaders can unlock greater engagement and success. The journey toward empathetic leadership begins with small, intentional actions—listening actively, showing vulnerability, and prioritizing well-being.

This week, our very own Aoifa O’Donnell represented National EAP on the “Permission to Achieve” Panel at the Herald Community Newspapers 2nd annual WE Summit Conference! Other esteemed panelists included Sharen Phillips, Director at Google; Tifphani White-King, Partner at Forvis Mazars; Maria P. Conzatti, President at Nassau Community College; and 🌏Christina Armentano, Executive VP and COO at Paraco Gas.

These inspiring women shared invaluable insights and offered advice on how to get out of your own way and give yourself permission to achieve. They discussed the internal and external barriers women too often face, and the importance of pushing through our doubt and creating spaces of belonging for ourselves and other women.

A major takeaway Aoifa shared with the audience was the need to “Let that SHOULD go!” Too often our mind is dominated by all the should’s we and others tell us are important but just wear us down.  It is time to end that pressure cooker thinking and instead embrace a language and mindset that fuels us into our greatness. These fantastic women’s stories, expertise, and passion shone through, inspiring many in attendance.

Additionally, National EAP’s Stephanie Devine and Vincent J. Accardi attended the event, where they engaged with attendees and showcased our services at our networking booth. It was a fantastic opportunity to connect with top level professionals and share our commitment to workplace wellness.

Thank you to everyone who put together this incredible event and to all the wonderful Long Island businesspeople we got to connect with. “(WE) are UNSTOPPABLE” 🤝 🧡

As an EAP counselor and military veteran, I have encountered many individuals who have expressed suicidal ideation, and it is a delicate situation that requires immediate attention and specialized care.

When working with clients experiencing suicidal thoughts, my primary focus is on ensuring their safety and providing a supportive environment. I approach these situations with empathy, active listening, and non-judgmental understanding.

Identifying symptoms of suicidal ideation enables early intervention and prevents crises from escalating. Prompt recognition allows employers and managers to connect individuals with appropriate mental health resources, including their EAP, and community support systems.

By recognizing symptoms of suicidal ideation, employers and managers contribute to reducing the stigma associated with mental health issues, and when leaders openly acknowledge and address these concerns, it encourages employees to seek help and support without fear of judgment or reprisal.

Employers play a crucial role in creating a supportive work environment and promoting employee well-being. Here are some proactive steps employers can take to address suicide ideation:

  1. Promote mental health awareness: Educate employees about mental health, common signs of distress, and available resources. Encourage open conversations about mental well-being, reducing the stigma surrounding mental health issues.
  2. Implement comprehensive mental health policies: Establish clear policies and guidelines that support employees’ mental health, including resources for seeking help, reasonable accommodations, and the protection of confidentiality.
  3. Provide mental health training: Offer training sessions or workshops for managers and supervisors on recognizing signs of distress, how to respond empathetically, and referral procedures for accessing mental health resources.
  4. Promote your employee assistance programs (EAP): EAP is a confidential support service that provides employees with access to counseling and mental health resources. Ensure that employees are aware of these services and encourage their utilization.
  5. Foster a supportive work culture: Create a culture that values work-life balance, stress management, and self-care. Encourage employees to take breaks, use their vacation time, and maintain healthy boundaries between work and personal life.

In the modern workforce, supporting lactating mothers isn’t just a matter of compliance; it’s a crucial aspect of fostering a supportive and inclusive workplace culture. Employers play a pivotal role in ensuring that mothers who choose to breastfeed have the necessary resources and accommodations to do so comfortably and successfully. Here’s how employers can step up to support lactating mothers:

  • Establish Policies and Benefits: Implement clear policies that support lactation, including paid lactation breaks, flexible work hours for pumping sessions, and designated lactation rooms equipped with comfortable seating, electrical outlets, and refrigeration for milk storage. If possible, providing access to breast pumps and breastfeeding supplies can also greatly alleviate financial burdens on mothers.
  • Educate and Train Managers and Employees: Conduct training sessions to educate managers and employees about the importance of supporting lactating mothers. This includes sensitivity training to dispel any misconceptions or discomfort around breastfeeding in the workplace. Foster a supportive culture where breastfeeding is normalized and respected. Encourage colleagues to be understanding of lactating mothers’ needs and to refrain from making them feel isolated or stigmatized.
  • Offer Flexible Work Arrangements: Provide flexible work arrangements, such as telecommuting options or compressed workweeks, to accommodate the demands of lactation. This flexibility helps mothers balance their professional responsibilities with their caregiving duties.
  • Provide Resources for Continuing Education: Offer resources for lactation consultations or workshops to help mothers navigate breastfeeding challenges. This proactive support can prevent issues that might otherwise lead to early cessation of breastfeeding.
  • Support the Transition Back to Work: Facilitate a smooth transition for mothers returning to work after maternity leave by allowing phased returns or part-time schedules initially. This helps mothers gradually adjust and maintain their breastfeeding routine.
  • Advocate for Policy Changes: Advocate for supportive policies at a broader level, both internally and externally. Engage with industry groups or policymakers to influence legislation that supports lactating mothers’ rights in the workplace.
  • Solicitate Feedback and Make Improvements: Regularly solicit feedback from lactating mothers about their experiences and needs. Use this input to continually improve lactation support programs and accommodations.

Supporting lactating mothers isn’t just beneficial for the mothers themselves; it contributes to a more engaged, loyal, and productive workforce. By investing in comprehensive support systems and creating a culture of inclusivity, employers can demonstrate their commitment to the well-being of all employees, ultimately fostering a more supportive and successful workplace environment. Embracing these practices not only complies with legal requirements but also sets a standard for corporate responsibility and employee welfare.
